The Zakat Council, established under the Zakat Act, has appointed Sheikh Imthithaau Abbas as the new Director General of the Maldives Zakat House, following a competitive selection process.
According to the Council, Sheikh Imthithaau was chosen after interviews were conducted with all shortlisted applicants. The decision was made based on an assessment of candidates’ qualifications, academic background, and professional experience, with the Council concluding that he was the most suitable for the role.
Sheikh Imthithaau most recently served as Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs, a position he held until January 14. Over the years, he has also taken on several senior and advisory roles, including Senior Political Director and Head of International Relations, contributing to policy development and institutional leadership.
Before the enactment of the Zakat Act, Sheikh Imthithaau played a key role in the Maldives Zakat House as Vice Chairman of its Sharia Advisory Committee, where he was involved in guiding zakat-related governance and compliance from a religious perspective.
Academically, Sheikh Imthithaau holds a Master’s degree in Judicial Sciences and Sharia Policy from the Islamic University of Maldives, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Hadith Sciences and Islamic Studies from the Islamic University of Madinah. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Sharia Policy, further strengthening his academic credentials in the field.
The Zakat Council said the appointment reflects its commitment to ensuring strong leadership at the Maldives Zakat House, as the institution continues its mandate to manage zakat funds in accordance with Islamic principles and national law.
