MWSC Targets Completion of All Projects This Year

Managing Director of MWSC, Abdul Matheen Mohamed.

The Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has set a target to complete all development projects awarded to the company by the end of this year, Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed has said.

In remarks to state media, Matheen acknowledged that several MWSC projects had faced delays in previous years. He said the company’s current focus is to ensure that no further projects are stalled and that ongoing works proceed without additional disruptions.

According to the Managing Director, implementation across multiple islands involves several contractors, and challenges such as staffing shortages and logistical constraints have affected timelines. He added that MWSC is actively working to address these issues in order to maintain steady progress.

Despite the obstacles, Matheen said project execution is continuing and the company remains committed to completing all contracted works within the year.

The update comes as the government continues its broader push to expand water and sewerage infrastructure across the country. In his Presidential Address 2026, President Mohamed Muizzu stated that since assuming office, water supply systems have been established in 42 islands, while sewerage networks have been implemented in 39 islands.

He further announced plans to expand water services to 51 additional islands and introduce sewerage systems in 40 more islands within the next 18 months.

Officials say the ongoing efforts form part of a nationwide strategy to improve access to safe water and modern sanitation services, particularly in outer atolls.
