MACL Marks 50 Years of Air India Operations to Maldives

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) on Saturday commemorated five decades of operations by Air India to the Maldives, marking a significant milestone in the country’s aviation history.

Air India began flights to the Maldives on 21 February 1976, becoming the first Indian carrier to operate services to the destination. Over the past 50 years, the airline has played a longstanding role in connecting the Maldives with India and the wider region.

To celebrate the golden jubilee, a special ceremony was held at Velana International Airport following the arrival of an Air India flight. The aircraft was welcomed with a ceremonial water salute upon landing, while passengers were greeted with commemorative gifts to mark the occasion. A total of 139 travellers on board received tokens of appreciation from MACL.

In a message shared with the media, MACL said the anniversary activities were organised to reflect the strong bilateral relationship between India and the Maldives, while also recognising Air India’s contribution to the growth of the country’s aviation sector.

Over the past five decades, the Maldives’ aviation industry has expanded considerably, with an increasing number of international airlines now operating routes to the island nation, supporting tourism and economic development.
