Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, has detailed the company’s long-term strategy to strengthen Velana International Airport (VIA) as the Maldives’ main international aviation hub.
Speaking at Aviation Forum 2026- Connecting Maldives, Shareef said the company’s priorities are centred on expanding airport capacity, improving operational efficiency and enhancing the passenger experience as tourism and air traffic continue to grow.
The discussion took place under the theme “The New Journey in 3 Parts: Capacity, Revenue and Efficiency.”
Preparing for Future Demand
According to Shareef, MACL’s current development strategy is focused on ensuring the airport is equipped to meet future passenger demand while supporting the continued growth of the country’s tourism and aviation sectors.
He highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at increasing airport capacity and strengthening cargo operations, noting that the expansion plans are intended to reinforce VIA’s role as a critical gateway connecting the Maldives to international markets.
Push Toward Digital Transformation
The CEO also outlined several digital initiatives being introduced across airport operations.
These include expanded self-service check-in facilities, self-baggage drop systems, immigration e-gates, biometric technology, digital wayfinding systems and mobile boarding solutions.
MACL says the upgrades are designed to streamline passenger movement, reduce waiting times and improve overall efficiency throughout the airport.
Expanding Revenue Streams
In addition to aviation-related income, Shareef stressed the importance of growing non-aeronautical revenue sources to support the airport’s long-term sustainability.
He said MACL is exploring greater opportunities through retail services, commercial partnerships, lounges and food and beverage operations as part of efforts to diversify income streams.
Coordination with Industry Stakeholders
The CEO further emphasised the need for continued collaboration between MACL, airlines, tourism operators and other business partners to maintain strong international connectivity and adapt to changes within the global aviation industry.
Officials say the airport’s ongoing transformation forms part of broader efforts to position the Maldives as a more competitive and efficient travel destination, while improving services for both tourists and local travellers.
