Addu Moves Closer to Permanent Solution for Power Outages

Efforts to bring a long-term solution to electricity disruptions in Addu City have moved a step closer, with Fenaka Corporation confirming that the generators being manufactured for the new Addu Central Power Station are nearing completion.

The project is expected to address one of the most persistent concerns raised by residents of the country’s second-largest city, where power outages and electricity supply issues have affected households and businesses for years.

According to Fenaka, the new power station will be equipped with four 5.2-megawatt generators, providing a total generation capacity of 26 megawatts. The company said the facility is scheduled to be completed and commissioned by the middle of next year.

The utility provider noted that work is also underway to upgrade Addu’s electricity distribution network to ensure the benefits of the new powerhouse are fully realized once the project becomes operational.

As an interim measure, Fenaka installed a 1.8-megawatt generator in Addu last month. While the additional capacity has helped reduce the frequency of power interruptions, the company acknowledged that it is not a permanent solution to the city’s growing electricity demand.

The generators for the new power station are being manufactured by Belgium-based Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC). Fenaka said the units are modern low-speed engines, which are designed to offer greater durability, efficiency and reliability compared to some of the high-speed generators currently in use.

The power station itself is being developed by Dubai-based Definite Solutions.

Addu City, home to thousands of residents and businesses, has seen increasing demand for electricity in recent years. Improving the reliability of the city’s power supply has been identified as a key infrastructure priority by both local authorities and the government.

The Addu Central Power Station project is among a number of infrastructure initiatives being accelerated under the current administration to address longstanding service challenges across the country.

Once completed, officials believe the new facility will significantly strengthen Addu’s electricity network and provide a more stable and dependable power supply for residents and businesses alike.
