The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has launched an ambitious two-year digital transformation programme that will modernise prosecution services through artificial intelligence, digital case management and new online public services.
Named PGO 2.0, the initiative was officially inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during a ceremony held at Barceló Nasandhura Malé.
According to the PGO, the project will replace many of its existing paper-based processes with fully digital systems while introducing sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) into the office’s case management platform to improve efficiency and support prosecutors in their work.
The office said AI will be used to assist with tasks such as analysing case files, reviewing evidence and streamlining administrative processes, enabling prosecutors to prepare legal documents more efficiently. However, it stressed that prosecutorial decisions will continue to be made by legal professionals, with AI serving strictly as a decision-support tool rather than replacing human judgment.
Several new digital services were also unveiled as part of the launch.
Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed officially launched the PGO’s redesigned website, while a new online service platform named eDHOROASHI was introduced to allow members of the public and government institutions to access prosecution-related services remotely, reducing the need for in-person visits.
The ceremony also saw the launch of LETHUN, a mobile application developed to provide legal practitioners and the public with easier access to Maldivian laws, regulations, court judgments and criminal justice procedures. The application also includes available English translations of legal materials and was officially launched by Attorney General Uz Ahmed Usham.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed unveiled Evidence: A Practitioner’s Guide, a new publication produced by the Prosecutor General’s Office Academy to provide guidance on the application of the Evidence Act.
The launch of PGO 2.0 forms part of the government’s broader Maldives 2.0 digital transformation agenda, which seeks to modernise public institutions through technology while improving the accessibility, efficiency and quality of government services.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said the project has been designed around a human-led, AI-powered approach, combining technological innovation with professional oversight to strengthen the country’s criminal justice system and deliver faster, more efficient services to the public.
