Xiamen Airlines has officially commenced scheduled flights between Xiamen, China, and Velana International Airport in the Maldives. This development follows the airline’s earlier introduction of charter services in February 2024 and marks a significant step in its expansion into the Maldivian market.
The inaugural flight, operated by a Boeing 787-8, touched down at Velana International Airport at 6:05 PM local time. Starting August 3, 2024, Xiamen Airlines will provide three weekly flights using Boeing 737-800 aircraft, each accommodating 169 passengers.
Flight Details:
- Aircraft: Boeing 737-800
- Frequency: Three flights per week
- Operating Days: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
The new service is anticipated to enhance the airline’s visibility in the Maldives and offer additional travel options for passengers.
Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), expressed enthusiasm about the new service, stating, “We are pleased to welcome Xiamen Airlines’ scheduled flights at Velana International Airport. This addition, following their charter services, aligns with our objective to enhance global connectivity and supports the government’s goal of attracting 2 million tourists this year.”
Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), highlighted the significance of the new flights, noting, “The introduction of scheduled flights from Xiamen Airlines is a key development for the Maldives’ tourism sector. It follows earlier direct flights from Fujian province, China, and is expected to boost tourist arrivals from China, benefiting the local economy and tourism industry.”
Xiamen Airlines joins several other Chinese carriers, including Beijing Capital Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and Chongqing Airlines, in serving the Maldivian market.
