Maldives Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has praised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s foreign policy, highlighting its positive impact on the nation’s future. In a recent tweet, Speaker Abdul Raheem expressed his gratitude to President Muizzu, stating, “Your strong foreign policy makes the future of the country look very bright. Thank you for your efforts and determination for the sake of the country and the people.”
The Speaker’s remarks come as India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, is on a three-day visit to the Maldives, marking his first visit since President Muizzu assumed office in November 2023. During this visit, Minister Jaishankar paid a courtesy call on President Muizzu at the President’s Office on Saturday.
In the meeting, President Muizzu warmly welcomed the Indian External Affairs Minister and expressed his gratitude to the Indian government for the hospitality extended during his visit to India in June. The President had attended the swearing-in ceremony of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The discussions between President Muizzu and Minister Jaishankar focused on the implementation of ongoing projects and explored avenues for future collaboration in key areas such as economic development, housing, defense, tourism, capacity building, and infrastructure development.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation for the benefit of both nations. President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s dedication to strengthening the historic ties between the Maldives and India, acknowledging India as a close ally and a vital partner.
In addition to the high-level meeting, Minister Jaishankar and Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer jointly inaugurated six High Impact Community Development Projects, including initiatives in street lighting, mental health, children’s speech therapy, and special education.
The two ministers also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Maldives’ Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. The MoU aims to introduce a digital payment system in the Maldives, further enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries.
