President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, addressing the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), made a strong call for upholding the rule of law and urged the international community to grant full UN membership to Palestine. In his speech, President Muizzu condemned the ongoing human rights violations against Palestinians and stressed the urgent need for global action.
Highlighting the situation in Gaza, the President described it as a grave injustice and a failure of the international system. He criticized Israel’s actions, stating that its attacks have caused the deaths of thousands of Palestinians, including innocent civilians, children, and even babies. Dr. Muizzu further condemned the destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, and humanitarian infrastructure in Gaza, describing it as an atrocity that the world cannot ignore.
He also brought attention to Israel’s military raids in Lebanon, which have escalated the violence and led to further civilian casualties, adding that the world is now grappling with an even broader humanitarian crisis.
President Muizzu underscored that journalists have also become targets of the violence. He condemned Israel’s attacks on journalists, including Palestinian and Lebanese reporters, as well as the targeting of Al Jazeera’s offices. These actions, he stated, appear to be attempts to silence those reporting the truth of the ongoing atrocities.
Dr. Muizzu called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for acts of terrorism and violations of international law, as well as for disregarding UN resolutions aimed at protecting Palestinian rights.
In his closing remarks, the President reaffirmed his call for the recognition of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He emphasized that the path to peace and justice lies in recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people and granting them full membership in the United Nations.
