President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu extended heartfelt congratulations to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the 101st anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye, marking the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923. In his official message, President Muizzu conveyed his best wishes for the well-being and prosperity of the Turkish people.
The diplomatic relationship between the Maldives and Türkiye was formally established in 1979, fostering cooperation primarily in the fields of tourism and defense. Both nations, recognized as prominent tourist destinations, hope to expand their partnership in tourism and trade sectors. The Maldives and Türkiye also work closely on international platforms, including the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), further strengthening their shared global objectives.
The ties between the two countries were notably reinforced following the high-level visit of Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan to the Maldives in 2005, which catalyzed a series of diplomatic exchanges. Through these visits, both countries have discussed areas of mutual interest and benefit, contributing to a strong foundation of trust and support. The Maldives has also benefitted from Türkiye’s assistance, particularly in the aftermath of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, which saw Türkiye extend generous aid to support recovery efforts.
In his message, President Muizzu expressed confidence that the Maldives-Türkiye relationship will continue to deepen in the years ahead, built on shared values, mutual respect, and a commitment to fostering peace and prosperity on the global stage.
