President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to combating the drug epidemic in the Maldives, labeling it a top national priority. His remarks followed a major drug bust conducted by Maldivian security forces, which resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of narcotics.
The operation, carried out by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Maldives Police Service, intercepted a Sri Lankan vessel near Makunudhoo on the night of November 23. The vessel was escorted to Kulhudhuffushi City, where authorities conducted an exhaustive search the next morning. Law enforcement uncovered nearly half a tonne of drugs, including 344 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and 124.6 kilograms of cocaine, marking one of the largest seizures in recent history.
President Muizzu took to social media to commend the efforts of law enforcement agencies. “Ridding the country of drugs is one of our top priorities,” he stated, expressing gratitude for their dedication and vigilance.
The government has intensified its efforts to curb the spread of drugs. Over the past year, 158 drug-related operations were conducted nationwide, leading to 12,561 searches and the arrest of 1,009 individuals. These efforts highlight a sustained commitment to addressing the issue at its roots.
As the Maldives continues to grapple with the social and economic challenges posed by drug abuse, the President’s resolve underscores the administration’s broader strategy to create a safer and more secure future for its citizens.
