WAMCO Launches Waste Management Services in Himmafushi

The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has officially commenced waste management services on Himmafushi Island, Kaafu Atoll, as part of its ongoing efforts to expand environmentally friendly waste disposal systems across the Maldives. The service was inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his recent two-day visit to islands in Kaafu and Alifu Alifu Atolls.

With its introduction to Himmafushi, WAMCO now provides waste management solutions for households, businesses, and construction sites on the island. This initiative aligns with the government’s national waste management strategy, which aims to implement sustainable waste disposal practices and mitigate the challenges faced in waste management throughout the nation.

Initially operating solely in Malé City, WAMCO has progressively extended its services to other regions, including Kulhudhuffushi City, Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and Maafushi in Kaafu Atoll. In 2024, the corporation further expanded its reach to Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

As part of the “Magey Saafu Raajje” (“My Clean Maldives”) initiative, the government has introduced a national waste management program under its Week-14 Roadmap. This comprehensive project aims to establish eco-friendly waste management systems across the islands, including the development of waste disposal centers and enhancing waste transportation networks between regional centers and inhabited islands.

In addition to service delivery, the initiative emphasizes public education and training on safe waste management practices, ensuring communities are actively involved in maintaining cleanliness and sustainability.

President Dr. Muizzu highlighted that the program reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a cleaner and greener Maldives. The expansion of WAMCO’s services represents a significant step forward in achieving the country’s long-term sustainability goals.
