In his address at the opening of Parliament today, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu confirmed that the final list of flat recipients under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ housing scheme will be released before the end of February, with the handover of flats scheduled for completion by the end of September.
During his speech, President Muizzu acknowledged the ongoing concerns surrounding the validity of the flat allocation list for the second phase of the Hulhumalé housing project. “We are taking decisive steps to resolve issues regarding the list’s accuracy,” he stated, emphasizing that this matter remains a key priority for his administration.
Initially, the President had indicated that the list would be unveiled before the start of Ramadan. However, in a bid to streamline the process, the Housing Ministry has now opted to evaluate only those applicants already included in the gazetted final list rather than reassessing all submissions. This move comes as part of efforts to expedite the delivery of housing and ensure that the benefits of the government’s initiatives are promptly realized.
Highlighting the broader context of the housing project, President Muizzu referenced the completion of 4,000 flats financed by an Indian Exim Bank loan. He also noted that the declaration of 4,000 flat recipients, coupled with the Anti-Corruption Commission’s review of the list’s validity, underscores the complex challenges the government is addressing.
The President’s announcement marks a significant step forward in the housing initiative, promising that the final beneficiary list will be made public before the close of February, and that flats will begin to be handed over to recipients by the end of September.
As the government moves ahead with these plans, officials and citizens alike remain hopeful that the timely delivery of these flats will help alleviate housing challenges and bolster confidence in the nation’s development programs.
