Government Recovers Over MVR 1 Billion in Unpaid Migrant Worker Fees

The Maldivian government has successfully reclaimed more than MVR 1 billion in overdue fees from employers related to migrant workers, as announced by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan. This significant recovery addresses a substantial portion of the MVR 1.7 billion owed to the state in visa fees, work permit fees, quota fees, and penalties.

Minister Ihusaan emphasized the administration’s commitment to resolving the issue of undocumented migrant workers through initiatives like “Operation Kurangi.” Launched in May 2024, this operation aims to collect biometric data from all foreign workers in the Maldives to ensure compliance with national laws and regulations. To date, biometric information from over 44,000 migrant workers has been collected.

In addition to these efforts, the government is intensifying its crackdown on drug trafficking and substance abuse. Plans are underway to establish drug offender remand centers in three regions, offering community rehabilitation services. Minister Ihusaan highlighted the seizure of drugs valued at USD 77.55 million last year and affirmed the administration’s resolve to dismantle drug operations across the nation.

The government is also proposing legislative amendments to strengthen the fight against drug and gang-related crimes, aiming to enhance enforcement capabilities and ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

These comprehensive measures reflect the administration’s dedication to addressing critical issues affecting the nation, from labor rights and immigration to public health and safety.
