Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has praised the way Maldivians prepare for the holy month of Ramadan, describing it as a true reflection of the country’s culture, traditions, and strong sense of unity.
His remarks came during the official launch of the “Roadha Saafu” clean-up program, a nationwide initiative aimed at ensuring public spaces are well-maintained ahead of Ramadan. The program, which brings together government agencies, state-owned enterprises, and community volunteers, was inaugurated by Minister Shareef.
Speaking at the event, the Minister emphasized that social initiatives like Roadha Saafu demonstrate the deep-rooted unity among Maldivians, as people from various sectors come together for a common cause.
“We continue to witness the strong unity among our people through initiatives like this. The Maldivian spirit of working together remains as strong as ever, and today’s turnout is proof of that,” he stated.
The initiative is divided into five clean-up zones, each assigned to different ministries and state-owned enterprises, ensuring a coordinated effort to enhance public spaces.
Clean-Up Teams and Designated Areas
- Group 1: Cleaning the Artificial Beach area, led by the Road Development Corporation (RDC), Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, and the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works.
- Group 2: Assigned to Usfasgandu, with participation from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), and relevant government ministries.
- Group 3: Focused on the industrial zone, involving the Maldives Police Service (MPS), Maldives Correctional Service, Maldives Customs Service, and the National Drug Agency.
- Group 4: Tasked with cleaning up the Ports area, led by the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage and the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works.
- Group 5: Responsible for cleaning Salman Mosque and its surroundings, with support from Maldives Gas Limited and government agencies.
The Roadha Saafu initiative is an annual effort aimed at preparing the country for Ramadan, ensuring that public spaces, mosques, and key gathering areas are cleaned and well-maintained.
Minister Shareef reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting such initiatives, noting that they are not just about cleanliness but also about fostering stronger community bonds.
With Ramadan approaching, the nationwide clean-up serves as a reminder of the importance of collective responsibility, reinforcing the shared values that define Maldivian society.
