STELCO Unveils Hulhumalé Annex 2 Powerhouse to Meet Rising Electricity Demand

The State Electric Company (STELCO) has inaugurated the Hulhumalé Annex 2 Powerhouse, a new backup facility aimed at reinforcing electricity capacity in anticipation of peak demand in the post-Ramadan period.

Developed in record time, the powerhouse spans a 48,000-square-foot plot and is part of STELCO’s broader initiative to strengthen the energy grid in Hulhumalé. The facility was officially commissioned at a ceremony attended by STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy, who commended the dedication of the company’s staff in delivering the project under tight deadlines.

Fahmy noted that electricity consumption during Ramadan is expected to remain stable, largely due to a directive by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, which closed government offices during the final ten days of Ramadan—a period that also coincides with school holidays.

However, Fahmy cautioned that electricity demand is set to rise sharply after Ramadan, as the country enters the hotter months of the year. He assured that STELCO is fully prepared to meet the increased demand, ensuring an uninterrupted power supply for residents.

The Hulhumalé Annex 2 Powerhouse is equipped with 12 generator sets, each producing 1.6 megawatts of power. Seven generators are currently operational, while the remaining five are set to be activated during Ramadan.

Once fully functional, the powerhouse will add a total installed capacity of 19.2 megawatts to Hulhumalé’s energy infrastructure. While capacity-related outages are not expected, Fahmy advised residents to be mindful of potential technical disruptions.

STELCO’s latest initiative underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance power generation capacity, ensuring reliable and efficient electricity supply as demand continues to grow in Hulhumalé.
