Maldives Establishes Lifetime Allowance Policy for November 3 Heroes and Martyrs’ Families

The Ministry of Defence has introduced a lifetime allowance policy for the families of soldiers martyred during the November 3, 1988 coup attempt, as well as for those who were awarded medals for bravery in defending the nation.

This initiative aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to honor the heroes of November 3, ensuring financial support for the families of fallen soldiers and medal recipients.

According to the policy, the families of soldiers killed in the November 3, 1988 attack will receive monthly allowances for life. Eligible beneficiaries include the parents, children, and widow of the deceased soldier. Each family member will be entitled to a lifetime payment of USD 584 per month.

In addition to the support for martyrs’ families, the government will also provide lifetime allowances to those awarded for their bravery during the coup attempt:

  • Huravee Gold Medal (Medal for Exceptional Bravery) recipients will receive USD 584 per month for life.
  • Huravee Silver Medal (Medal for Bravery) recipients will receive USD 519 per month for life.
  • Ribbon of Bravery recipients will receive USD 389 per month for life.

The policy states that these allowances will continue for the lifetime of the recipient. In the event of a recipient’s passing, family members must notify the Ministry of Defence within one month.

This initiative reflects President Muizzu’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices made by the defenders of the Maldives’ independence and sovereignty. The policy aims to recognize their extraordinary courage while also promoting patriotism and national pride.

The November 3, 1988 attack, carried out by mercenaries linked to a Maldivian political faction, remains one of the most significant events in the country’s modern history. The introduction of lifetime allowances marks a historic recognition of those who risked their lives to protect the nation.
