The Inter-Parliamentary Union, established in 1889, is the world’s oldest and largest organization of national parliaments. It serves as a global platform for parliamentary diplomacy, fostering cooperation among legislators and promoting democratic governance.

The Maldives formally became a member of the IPU following a parliamentary resolution passed on November 4, 2004. Subsequently, on June 6, 2006, guidelines were approved to establish the Maldivian branches of the union, further solidifying the country’s participation in global parliamentary affairs.

The 150th Assembly offers an opportunity for the Maldives to engage with international counterparts, exchange legislative experiences, and reinforce its commitment to democratic processes and multilateral cooperation.
