Newly Installed Lifts in First Four Hiyaa Towers Set to Launch Next Month

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced that eight newly installed elevators in the Hiyaa housing complex will begin operations in the first week of April, delivering on a key pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to residents.

According to HDC, two lifts have been installed in each of the first four towers. Final testing is currently underway in three of the buildings, while installation in the fourth tower is nearing completion. The corporation confirmed that the project remains on track, with no delays reported.

As part of preparations for the lift activation, corridor access in the respective towers will also be completed in time. HDC added that installation efforts in the remaining towers are progressing steadily, with all required equipment already delivered to the sites.

The lift installation project officially began in April last year and marks a significant improvement in accessibility for Hiyaa residents. Each tower contains approximately 400 flats, housing close to 2,000 people. Until now, the limited number of elevators—typically just three or four per building—had caused lengthy wait times during peak hours.

In total, 32 new lifts will be installed across 16 towers in the Hiyaa complex. The work is being undertaken by Shenyang Yuan Intellectual Group, a Chinese company specializing in elevator solutions.

HDC noted that the new elevators are built with accessibility in mind. They can accommodate up to 14 passengers at once and are equipped to safely transport patients on stretchers. Additionally, floor indicators include Braille markings to support visually impaired residents.

The installation comes as part of broader government efforts to enhance public housing infrastructure and improve living conditions in the capital’s high-density residential areas.
