Land Reclamation of Rasmale’ Project Crosses 100-Hectare Milestone

The land reclamation phase of the ambitious Rasmale’ Project is making notable progress, with 101 hectares reclaimed so far, according to an update shared by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Sunday.

The large-scale project, which officially commenced on December 18, 2023, aims to reclaim a total of 1,009 hectares of land, divided into twelve sections. HDC reported that out of the four sections currently under development, 101 hectares had been reclaimed as of April 13.

Initially, the government targeted completing the reclamation process within ten months. However, due to unforeseen challenges that caused delays, revisions are being made to the original timeline. Despite the setbacks, work is continuing steadily.

The dredging works for the project have been contracted to Mohan Mutha Exports Private Limited and China Railway Construction Corporation. Together, the two firms are responsible for reclaiming a total of 378 hectares across the assigned sections.

In addition to land reclamation, preparations for shore protection works on the newly reclaimed areas are expected to begin in the coming days, HDC said.

The Rasmale’ Project represents one of the most significant urban development initiatives in the Maldives. It is designed to accommodate 65,000 housing units and is envisioned as an Eco City, incorporating modern environmental standards to promote sustainable living.

Once completed, Rasmale’ is set to become the first zero-carbon city in the Indian Ocean region. The government regards the project as a major step forward, both in terms of technological innovation and environmental responsibility.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously expressed confidence that the Rasmale’ development will play a critical role in addressing the country’s housing needs while advancing national goals for environmental sustainability.
