MTCC Ramps Up Development: Aims to Complete 99% of Projects by 2028

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is fast-tracking its infrastructure projects with the aim of completing nearly its entire portfolio by the end of 2028, in line with government efforts to overhaul national development timelines.

Speaking on the company’s renewed direction, MTCC CEO and Managing Director Ahmed Saudee announced that over 340 ongoing projects—spanning various sectors and islands—are being restructured for faster delivery. Saudee, a former Deputy Commissioner of Police, said the shift comes in response to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s call to prioritise rapid infrastructure progress across the country.

“Under the President’s guidance, we’ve realigned our operations to boost efficiency and meet the ambitious deadlines ahead,” Saudee said. “Our teams are working around the clock to ensure communities begin reaping the benefits of development without unnecessary delays.”

One notable example is the land reclamation project in Gulhi, Kaafu Atoll. Initially scheduled for completion in 2026, the project is now on track to finish as early as September this year. Saudee described this as a critical benchmark in MTCC’s revised operational roadmap, demonstrating the company’s capability to significantly compress timelines without compromising quality.

MTCC’s portfolio spans vital sectors such as education, healthcare, and transportation, and also includes numerous previously stalled projects that had been languishing due to various setbacks. In recent weeks, in response to fresh government directives, the company has mobilised teams across 11 islands to commence 38 new projects.

Despite the scale and complexity of its nationwide operations, Saudee remains confident that the company can achieve its 99% completion target by the final quarter of 2028. He credited the dedication of MTCC’s personnel, many of whom are now operating in high-intensity environments to keep projects on schedule.

“Our engineers, technicians, and support teams are working relentlessly. This momentum is key to delivering the infrastructure promises made to the people,” he said.

The accelerated timeline represents a significant pivot in the Maldives’ infrastructure development strategy, reflecting the administration’s broader vision to rapidly uplift public services and local economies. As a state-owned enterprise, MTCC continues to play a central role in translating policy goals into tangible outcomes across the island nation.

According to Saudee, the company’s current trajectory reflects not only operational discipline but a renewed commitment to public accountability and timely service delivery.

“We are not just building infrastructure—we are building trust in the system,” he said.
