In a promising development for Maldivian sports and youth development, discussions have been initiated to bring a Liverpool Football Academy to the Maldives, following a high-level meeting between local officials and a visiting delegation from the English football giant.
The meeting, held earlier this week, included Maldives’ Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu, along with top representatives from the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) — CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree, and Chairperson Abdulla Ghiyas. The discussions focused on establishing a formal partnership with Liverpool FC aimed at launching a football academy in the country.
According to officials present at the meeting, the initiative is envisioned as a long-term collaboration that could not only elevate the standard of football training in the Maldives but also open up international pathways for young athletes. The parties explored multiple avenues for cooperation, including technical training, youth engagement programs, and joint promotional campaigns linking sports and tourism.
The proposed Liverpool Football Academy would mark a major milestone for Maldivian football, offering aspiring players access to world-class coaching and development under the umbrella of one of the most successful football clubs in the world.
The MMPRC has also hinted that such a collaboration could extend beyond the pitch, potentially involving destination marketing and brand partnerships that link the Maldives’ image as a luxury destination with the global reach of the Premier League club.
While no official timeline has been announced, both sides expressed optimism about the project, with further meetings expected to solidify plans in the coming months. If realised, the academy would become a significant addition to the Maldives’ growing portfolio of international sports collaborations.
