Five-Day Weather Warning: Storm Conditions Expected in Maldives Atolls

The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a warning of severe weather conditions expected to affect the northern and central atolls over the next five days, due to intensified southwest monsoon activity.

In its latest advisory, the Met Office cautioned that strong winds and very rough sea conditions are likely to persist through the week, urging heightened vigilance—particularly from seafarers and those residing in coastal areas.

“With the active southwest monsoon prevailing, we anticipate wind gusts and high swells across northern and central regions,” a spokesperson for the Maldives Meteorological Service said. “We strongly advise caution while travelling by sea.”

Fishermen, boat operators, and others who rely on maritime travel are advised to closely monitor weather updates and avoid venturing into hazardous areas unless necessary.

The southwest monsoon, typically active from May through September, brings with it heavy rains, squally winds, and challenging sea conditions—often disrupting transportation and posing risks to vessels operating in open waters.

Authorities have not yet issued any transport restrictions but encourage the public to stay informed through official weather channels and take necessary precautions.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Disaster Management authorities are also on standby to respond to any emergencies arising from the adverse weather.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose objects, be wary of flooding in low-lying areas, and avoid unnecessary sea travel until conditions stabilize.
