President Muizzu Backs Eco-Friendly Biking Initiative to Mark World Bicycle Day

In celebration of World Bicycle Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting environmentally friendly transportation across Maldivian cities, with a special emphasis on cycling as a sustainable solution.

In a message posted on his official social media accounts, the President highlighted the transformative power of bicycles—not just as a mode of transport, but as a tool for healthier lifestyles and greener communities.

“Bicycles are a simpler, cost-efficient, and sustainable transportation alternative for greener cities,” President Muizzu said. “As cities become increasingly congested, it’s time to rethink our transportation systems.”

He further noted that the government is currently working on developing policies and infrastructure that would enable and encourage biking in all urban areas of the Maldives. This includes exploring environmentally friendly models suited to the country’s unique geography and urban planning challenges.

The remarks were made as part of global observances of World Bicycle Day, held annually on June 3 to recognise the bicycle’s contribution to sustainable development and physical well-being. This year’s theme, “Cycling for a Sustainable Future”, aligns closely with the Maldives’ broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-conscious lifestyles.

As an island nation vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, the Maldives has increasingly been looking at low-emission mobility options as part of its climate resilience strategy. President Muizzu’s endorsement of cycling marks a key step in aligning public transport and environmental policy with global sustainability targets.
