New VIA Terminal Set to Redefine Travel in the Maldives

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has officially begun the countdown to the highly anticipated launch of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), setting the stage for what the company calls a “bold new era” in the nation’s aviation and tourism sectors.

At a ceremony held last night, MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed revealed countdown clocks across the airport premises, all ticking toward July 26, 2025—the date chosen for the terminal’s grand opening to coincide with Maldives’ Independence Day.

A Game-Changer for Maldivian Aviation

Located on Hulhulé Island, just minutes from the capital city Malé, the new terminal is designed to address the urgent need for expanded capacity at VIA. The current terminal, originally built to handle 1.5 million passengers annually, has long been operating beyond its intended limits. The new facility, covering approximately 78,000 square meters, is expected to handle up to 7 million passengers each year—a nearly fivefold increase.

“This project is more than bricks and mortar,” said Shareef. “It’s a transformational step forward for Maldivian tourism, connectivity, and long-term economic resilience.”

World-Class Amenities

The terminal boasts a range of modern amenities aimed at enhancing the traveler experience. These include:

  • Multiple aerobridges for direct boarding

  • A cutting-edge baggage-handling system to streamline arrivals and reduce wait times

  • Dozens of check-in counters and departure gates to manage peak flows

  • Expanded retail, dining, and lounge spaces

  • Improved immigration and security facilities for faster processing

MACL confirmed that the terminal’s design places strong emphasis on comfort, efficiency, and accessibility—aiming to rival international standards in major aviation hubs.

Strategic Rollout

While the terminal is set to open on July 26, MACL will implement a phased operational rollout. National carrier Maldivian will be the first to begin operations in the new terminal, with international airlines following by September 2025. This staggered approach is aimed at ensuring a seamless transition while avoiding disruptions during the peak tourist season.

In preparation, MACL will conduct a series of Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) trials in collaboration with immigration, airline, customs, and security stakeholders.

A Boost for Tourism and the Economy

The new terminal is being hailed as a catalyst for future growth in a country where tourism accounts for a significant portion of GDP. Government and airport officials believe the upgraded infrastructure will attract more carriers, increase flight frequency, and enhance the Maldives’ position as a leading luxury travel destination.

A National Milestone

Described by MACL and government leaders as a “national milestone,” the terminal’s opening marks one of the most significant infrastructure achievements in recent Maldivian history. It reflects years of planning and investment aimed at future-proofing the country’s primary international gateway.

Key Facts:

  • Launch Date: July 26, 2025 (Maldives Independence Day)

  • Terminal Size: ~78,000 m²

  • Annual Capacity: Up to 7 million passengers

  • Features: Aerobridges, automated baggage system, expanded check-in, retail, and lounges

  • Rollout: Domestic flights from July; international by September

With final preparations now underway, the Maldives is poised to unveil a state-of-the-art aviation facility—one that not only meets today’s demands but is also built to accommodate the aspirations of tomorrow.
