Traffic Diverted Near VIA as Final Works Begin on New Passenger Terminal

Traffic around Velana International Airport (VIA) has been temporarily rerouted as drainage works continue on the approach road to the airport’s new international terminal, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced.

The revised traffic plan, which came into effect on Saturday, redirects all incoming vehicles to use the road in front of the new terminal instead of the current main entry route. As part of this adjustment, the taxi stand has been relocated to the end of the passenger walkway. MTCC buses and taxi drop-offs will also now operate from this updated point.

The temporary changes will remain in place until July 21, MACL confirmed. During this period, U-turns will be permitted only at the designated police checkpoint area.

According to MACL, the diversion is necessary to complete final preparations for the much-anticipated opening of the new terminal, scheduled for July 26. The company stated that technical trials for passenger processing systems — including check-in, security, and baggage handling — have been successfully concluded.

MACL further noted that it is working closely with airlines, ground handling teams, and transport providers to ensure a seamless transition and minimize disruption for travelers.

The new international terminal, a major component of the airport’s ongoing expansion, is expected to significantly enhance passenger capacity and operational efficiency at the country’s main aviation gateway.
