Government Moves to Strengthen Agricultural Transport Through AgroNat Boats

The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has announced ongoing discussions with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to integrate AgroNat’s purpose-built vessels into the nation’s transport system, a step expected to greatly improve logistics for farmers across the Maldives.

According to the ministry, the initiative is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader pledge to strengthen food security and improve market access for local farmers. MTCC has already drafted ferry schedules, which are now under review to ensure they meet the specific needs of producers in island communities.

AgroNat’s fleet has been specially engineered for agricultural use, equipped with solar-powered cold and dry storage units to safeguard produce quality during transit. The vessels also feature designated accommodation for crew members and incorporate environmentally friendly systems to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.

Officials highlighted that the boats are built to withstand local maritime conditions, including challenges brought by climate change, ensuring both durability and reliability.

The ministry stressed that the project’s ultimate goal is to provide farmers with transport services that are sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective. By ensuring quicker and more reliable delivery of fresh produce to markets, the initiative is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve earnings for farmers, and increase the nationwide availability of high-quality local produce.

“This effort will not only strengthen the agricultural supply chain but also reinforce national food security,” the ministry said in its statement.
