Sewerage Network and Rehabilitation Centre Projects Break Ground in Laamu Gan

Two major infrastructure projects have officially commenced in Laamu Gan, marking a significant step forward in the island’s development. The initiatives — the installation of a sewerage system in the newly settled Thundi area and the construction of a rehabilitation centre — were inaugurated during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Laamu Atoll.

The ceremony launching the Thundi sewerage project was officiated by Minister of Construction and Housing Dr Abdulla Muththalib and attended by Gan Constituency MP Yoosuf Nasheed, Gan Council members, and Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed.

Valued at MVR 36.53 million, the project will deliver a complete modern sewerage network, including the main pipeline, sea outfall system, pump stations, and household connections. Once completed, the system will provide residents of Thundi with improved sanitation services and help advance the island’s overall environmental sustainability.

Officials noted that the initiative will significantly enhance living conditions for newly settled families in Thundi, aligning with the government’s broader goal to expand essential infrastructure across the nation’s outer islands.

In a separate ceremony, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan officiated the groundbreaking of the Gan Rehabilitation Centre.

The facility will serve as a hub for rehabilitation and reintegration, offering essential social, psychological, and health support services to assist individuals in their recovery journey. The centre is expected to play a key role in the government’s long-term strategy to strengthen community-based rehabilitation efforts.
Both projects represent a renewed focus on decentralised development and community well-being under the current administration. They are part of a wider programme of ongoing initiatives in Laamu Atoll, aimed at modernising infrastructure, expanding access to key services, and creating sustainable local development opportunities.
