Maldives Immigration to Launch Digital E-Visa System on November 23

Maldives Immigration is preparing to launch a new e-visa application system that will fully digitise the process of obtaining visas and permits, marking a major step in the government’s efforts to modernise public services.

The new system, which goes live on 23 November, is expected to streamline visa and permit applications, replacing the lengthy in-person procedures that have been the norm for decades.

The comprehensive digital platform, unveiled at a special ceremony on 10 November, features a mobile application, advanced facial recognition technology, and an integrated online system that allows applicants to complete all procedures remotely.

Immigration officials said the two-week interval between the official launch and the opening of applications is designed to help users familiarise themselves with the new process. During this period, the agency will publish step-by-step guides and tutorials across its online platforms to ensure a smooth transition.

In preparation for the changeover, 20 November has been set as the final date for submitting physical passports under the existing system. Applicants who have already submitted their documents are advised to collect processed passports before 23 November, as all pending cases after that date will be migrated to the new digital platform.

According to Maldives Immigration, the e-visa service is designed to eliminate the challenges and delays previously associated with visa processing. The new online system aims to make applications faster, more efficient, and user-friendly, reducing the need for multiple visits to immigration offices.

Officials described the rollout as a transformative upgrade in the country’s immigration services — one that not only enhances convenience for foreign visitors and residents but also strengthens operational transparency and service delivery within the Maldives’ digital governance framework.
