Tourism Minister: New VIA Terminal and Growing Bed Capacity to Push Arrivals Even Higher

The Maldives is poised for another surge in tourist arrivals, driven by the newly inaugurated terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) and the rapid expansion of accommodation capacity, according to Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim.

In an interview with MMTV marking the Government’s two-year anniversary, Minister Thoriq said significant strides are being made to further strengthen the country’s tourism industry — the backbone of the national economy. He highlighted the Administration’s focus on increasing tourism bed capacity as one of its most notable achievements over the past two years.

His remarks follow President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s announcement at the “Rayyithunnaa Eku Kuriah – Hafthaa 104” event held on 17 November, where the President revealed that the industry added 2,995 beds last year alone. In total, 6,223 new beds have come into operation since the Administration took office, marking substantial growth across resorts, hotels, and guesthouses.

Newly released figures from the Ministry of Tourism — published on 19 November — also indicate strong momentum in the sector. The Maldives has welcomed 1.9 million visitors so far this year, representing a 9.9 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Minister Thoriq said the opening of the new VIA terminal is already showing results, with enhanced passenger flow translating into rising arrivals. He noted that the terminal’s expanded capacity, paired with the continued development of airports, domestic transport links, and major resort upgrades, will fuel tourism growth across the entire country.

“Improvements in air connectivity, sea transport, and accommodation infrastructure together create the foundation for sustained nationwide tourism development,” he said, expressing confidence that the sector is on track for further progress in the coming months.
