The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has confirmed that production of canned tuna for next year’s Roadha Hadhiyaa programme is progressing on schedule and will be completed ahead of Ramadan.
The government earlier announced that every household in the country will receive one case of canned tuna as part of the annual Ramadan assistance initiative. Preparations for nationwide distribution are already underway.
According to MIFCO, production for the 2025 Ramadan programme began on 27 October last year. The company reported that 33 percent of the required output has already been completed, and production is expected to finish by the second week of January. MIFCO noted that the quantities being prepared are based on the volume distributed during this year’s Roadha Hadhiyaa, adding that planning for the coming Ramadan started well in advance to ensure smooth delivery.
During last year’s programme, a total of 111,231 cases of canned tuna were distributed—50,519 cases in the Malé region and 60,712 cases across the atolls.
The Roadha Hadhiyaa initiative was first announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at an event marking his Administration’s one-year anniversary. In its inaugural year, the programme provided households with 10 kilograms of basmati rice and 10 kilograms of flour.
Beyond food assistance, the government has introduced additional support measures for Ramadan. President Muizzu recently announced that all households billed under the domestic electricity tariff will receive a reduced maximum electricity bill of MVR 400 during the upcoming Ramadan period.
Officials say these measures aim to ease financial burdens on families and ensure essential needs are met during the holy month.
