Ooredoo Maldives Unveils Next-Gen AI eKYC System at Mobile World Congress in Doha

Ooredoo Maldives has introduced a cutting-edge AI-powered electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) solution at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Doha, marking a major leap forward for digital onboarding and identity verification in the Maldives.

According to Ooredoo, the AI-driven solution captures ID details, performs liveness and anti-spoofing checks, conducts facial recognition, and auto-approves SIM provisioning within seconds. The company says the technology sets a new benchmark for speed and reliability in the local telecommunications sector.

Instant Onboarding: What Customers Can Expect

The upgraded eKYC solution brings several customer-focused improvements:

  • Drastically reduced onboarding time: Processes that once took around a minute can now be completed in as little as 10 seconds.

  • Automatic SIM activation: Over 90 percent of registrations are now approved without manual intervention.

  • Enhanced fraud detection: The system identifies fake IDs and digitally manipulated images.

  • A seamless experience: No paperwork, no in-person queues — customers can complete the entire process directly from their mobile phones.

Multi-Layered Security Architecture

Ooredoo highlighted that the system uses a sophisticated verification chain to safeguard identity integrity and prevent fraudulent activity. The process includes:

  1. Camera-based capture of ID documents and selfies

  2. AI-powered OCR extraction and data validation

  3. Advanced liveness checks to prevent spoofing

  4. Facial matching against ID and backend databases

  5. Instant SIM approval once confidence thresholds are met

With all steps completed in under 10 seconds, the solution aims to deliver a fully digital, paperless onboarding experience.

A Step Toward a More Digital Maldives

Commenting on the launch, Ooredoo Maldives CEO & Managing Director Khalid Al-Hamadi said world-class digital services are essential for a global tourism hub like the Maldives.

“As a leading tourist destination, the Maldives must offer more than natural beauty. We must offer world-class digital experiences. Providing fast, reliable connectivity and smart digital solutions to every visitor and every local is crucial to our mission,” he said.

The company stated that the innovation reinforces its ongoing commitment to supporting national digital transformation efforts and advancing the Maldives’ digital economy.

Ooredoo Maldives says it will continue rolling out technologies that enhance customer experience, strengthen cybersecurity, and pave the way toward a more connected, digitally empowered nation.
