Operation Alimagu Expands to Malé and Gaafu Alifu Atoll in Crackdown on Drug and Financial Crimes

Special operations under Operation Alimagu were launched early Sunday in the Malé area and Gaafu Alifu Atoll, marking the latest phase of a nationwide campaign aimed at dismantling drug trafficking rings and associated money laundering networks.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the current round of operations is focused on individuals suspected of involvement in drug distribution and related financial crimes. Law enforcement teams are carrying out targeted actions in both locations as part of an intensified effort to disrupt organised criminal activity.

In Gaafu Alifu Atoll, police said the operation includes searches of suspects and associated premises, supported by specialised units from the Southern Police Division, intelligence teams and the Drug Enforcement Department. Authorities described the operation as a coordinated, multi-agency effort designed to maximise effectiveness and ensure thorough enforcement.

Operation Alimagu has been conducted across 39 islands nationwide since its launch, reflecting what police describe as a sustained and expanding response to drug-related crime. The operation seeks not only to seize illicit substances, but also to break up criminal networks, trace illegal financial flows and improve overall community safety.

Police said relevant government institutions and law enforcement agencies continue to work closely under the operation’s framework, with further actions expected as investigations progress.
