MTCC to Hold Walk-In Interviews to Recruit Drivers for Government Taxi Line

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced it will hold walk-in interviews this Saturday to recruit drivers for the upcoming government-operated taxi line service in Malé.

The taxi service will be run by MTCC under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, as part of broader efforts to improve access to reliable public transport. A total of 407 drivers are being recruited for the service, including 285 full-time and 122 part-time positions.

According to MTCC, applications for the driver roles will remain open until 17 January 2026. Walk-in interviews will take place on the same day at the Maafannu Bus Terminal, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Applicants are required to bring a valid national identity card and a valid driving licence when attending the interview.

The company said priority will be given to candidates who are already registered in the taxi driver registry maintained by the Ministry of Transport.

The new taxi line is being introduced by the government to address ongoing difficulties faced by residents in accessing taxis, particularly during peak hours, and to offer a more dependable and structured transport option. Responding to questions in Parliament last month, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen said the service is expected to be launched by January.

Once operational, the government-run taxi line will use a fleet of fully electric vehicles, making it an environmentally friendly transport solution. The fleet will include vehicles in three size categories and operate around the clock. The service will also be supported by a dedicated mobile application, designed to function in a manner similar to international ride-hailing platforms such as Uber and Grab, allowing users to book rides digitally.

Authorities say the initiative is expected to modernise taxi services in the capital while improving convenience, accessibility and sustainability in urban transport.
