A specialised facility dedicated to the treatment of neurological diseases and stroke has been opened at Dharumavantha Hospital, marking a major step forward in the expansion of advanced healthcare services in the Maldives.

The National Centre for Neuroscience and Stroke was inaugurated at a ceremony held at the hospital by Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals (MCGH).

The launch of the centre aligns with the government’s broader push to expand specialised medical services, particularly within the Greater Malé region. In a recent Presidential Statement, Mohamed Muizzu said the administration is prioritising the development of advanced healthcare services, noting that the new neuroscience and stroke centre represents a key milestone in elevating neurological care nationwide.

“With the opening of this centre, the treatment of neurological diseases in the Maldives will be taken to a new level,” the President said in his statement.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, MCGH CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem said the centre will employ advanced medical technologies, including robotic systems, to enable faster and more effective treatment for stroke patients. He added that the facility will be connected with regional hospitals, allowing patients across the country to access specialised neurological care regardless of location.

He noted that the centre adopts a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together relevant departments to provide integrated treatment across neuroscience and related fields, ensuring comprehensive patient care.

The centre also brings together some of the Maldives’ most experienced specialists, including the country’s first local neurologist Ahmed Rashid, first neurosurgeon Ali Niyaf, and first paediatric neurologist Samahath, all of whom will provide specialised services at the facility.

Haleem further said additional initiatives are planned later this year at Dharumavantha Hospital and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen and expand healthcare services across the country.
