Renovation Works Begin at Tsunami Monument Area in Malé

Renovation and upgrade works have commenced at the Tsunami Monument area in Malé, as part of a broader initiative to revitalise public spaces in the capital.

The project is being carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). In a post shared on social media, Minister of Housing, Construction and Infrastructure Abdulla Muththalib said structural deterioration in the area has made urgent repairs necessary.

According to the minister, the sheet piles along the site have significantly deteriorated due to erosion and prolonged exposure to marine conditions. New sheet piling works are therefore set to begin, alongside repairs to the quay wall. The improvements aim to enhance both safety and accessibility, transforming the area into a more welcoming and public-friendly space.

The redevelopment forms part of a wider government effort to upgrade parks and community areas across the capital. Authorities have stated that improving urban recreational spaces remains a key focus in ongoing infrastructure planning.

Beyond the Tsunami Monument site, renovation projects are also underway at Sultan Park and Republic Square, both of which are currently closed for upgrades. In addition, work is ongoing to improve facilities at Rasfannu Beach.

Officials say the collective upgrades are intended to modernise public spaces, improve safety standards and create more attractive recreational areas for residents and visitors alike.
