The political transition follows a decisive parliamentary election in which the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a commanding victory. Official results released by Bangladesh’s Election Commission show the BNP and its allies winning 212 out of 299 seats, paving the way for a new government widely expected to usher in political stability.

With the outcome, Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and late President Ziaur Rahman, is set to assume office as Prime Minister. President Muizzu is scheduled to meet the incoming leader during his visit.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Bangladesh were formally established on 22 September 1978, and the visit is expected to reaffirm bilateral ties and explore avenues for continued cooperation between the two South Asian nations.
