Additional Allowance Introduced for High Achievers Studying in Maldives

Students awarded the High Achievers Scholarship will now receive an additional allowance of USD 390 on top of their existing stipend if they choose to pursue their studies within the Maldives, under new policy changes announced by the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development.

The revised policy is aimed at encouraging academically high-performing students to remain in the country for their higher education, rather than seeking opportunities abroad.

Speaking to state media, State Minister Abdulraheem said the additional financial support is part of broader efforts to retain top talent locally and strengthen the domestic education sector.

Alongside the allowance, the ministry has also updated the eligibility requirements for the High Achievers Scholarship. Students must now achieve at least four A grades and one A* across five subjects, including SSC Dhivehi or Islam, along with a minimum C grade in English.

Previously, applicants were required to obtain A grades in all five subjects, making the revised criteria slightly more flexible while still maintaining high academic standards.

Officials say the changes are intended to widen access to the scholarship while continuing to recognise outstanding academic performance.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to develop human capital within the Maldives and support students in pursuing quality education opportunities locally.
