MPL Introduces Cost-Cutting Measures Amid Middle East Economic Impact

The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced a series of cost-control measures, including reduced working hours for administrative staff, as it moves to mitigate the economic effects linked to the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

In a statement, the company said the measures will come into effect from April 7, forming part of a broader effort to manage operational expenses while aligning with government-led initiatives.

Under the revised arrangements, administrative employees will now work from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., replacing the previous schedule which extended until 3:30 p.m. Operational staff will continue on shift-based duties, with working hours capped at a maximum of eight hours per day.

MPL also announced the suspension of non-essential international travel and overseas training programmes. Meetings and official engagements will instead be conducted online where possible, as part of efforts to reduce expenditure.

The company confirmed that the Maldives Maritime Conference 2026 has been postponed, while internal steps are being taken to reduce electricity consumption and promote energy-saving practices across the organisation.

Despite the cost-cutting initiatives, MPL assured that its primary operations will not be affected. Cargo handling, unloading and clearance services will continue as normal, ensuring that port activities and supply chains remain uninterrupted.

Officials said the measures are intended to maintain operational stability while responding prudently to external economic pressures.
