Parliament Panel Calls STO, State Pharma Over Drug Supply Issues

The Parliament’s State-Owned Enterprises Committee has called in several key state institutions to address growing concerns over medicine shortages and rising drug prices across the Maldives.

The meeting, scheduled for 11:00 AM today, is expected to bring together representatives from State Trading Organization (STO), State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Corporation Limited (State Pharma), the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), and Aasandha Company.

The decision to summon these institutions follows discussions held during a committee meeting late last month, where Mohamed Nazim raised concerns about the difficulties faced by the public in accessing essential medicines.

Nazim described the situation as a pressing national issue, noting that shortages are being reported in multiple regions. Committee members echoed these concerns, stating that some patients are forced to visit several pharmacies before finding the medications they need.

Lawmakers also pointed to sharp increases in the prices of certain drugs, highlighting the financial burden being placed on the public. Members stressed the need for immediate measures to address both availability and affordability.

The committee’s session is expected to examine the causes behind the shortages and explore possible solutions to ensure a more reliable supply of medicines.

In an effort to promote transparency and accountability, the meeting will be broadcast live, allowing the public to follow discussions on an issue that directly affects daily life across the country.
