Velana International Airport (VIA) and the Maamahi Executive Lounge have secured nominations at the World Travel Awards 2026, earning recognition in two of the Indian Ocean’s most prestigious aviation categories.
According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), VIA has once again been shortlisted for the title of Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport, while the Maamahi Executive Lounge has been nominated for Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport Lounge.
The latest nomination adds to VIA’s long record of recognition at the World Travel Awards. The airport has previously claimed the Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport title 12 times, reinforcing its reputation as one of the region’s leading aviation hubs.
MACL said the nominations reflect the company’s continued efforts to enhance airport operations and improve the travel experience for passengers using the country’s main international gateway.
The Maamahi Executive Lounge, which offers premium facilities and services for travellers, has also been recognised for its focus on delivering a comfortable and high-quality airport experience.
Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards is regarded as one of the travel and tourism industry’s most recognised awards programmes, honouring excellence across aviation, hospitality, tourism and destination management worldwide.
Velana International Airport serves as the Maldives’ primary international gateway, handling millions of passengers each year while continuing to expand its facilities and services to accommodate growing visitor numbers. MACL has also been undertaking major infrastructure projects at the airport, including the development of a new passenger terminal aimed at increasing capacity and enhancing operational efficiency.
MACL has encouraged the public and the travel industry to support the Maldives by casting their votes in both award categories.
