Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to arrive in the Maldives tonight on an official visit, marking his first trip to the country since becoming prime minister in 2022.
Anwar is visiting at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, with official talks between the two leaders scheduled for tomorrow.
Preparations were underway in Malé today for the Malaysian leader’s arrival, including around Izzudheen Jetty, Republic Square and the President’s Office, where visiting foreign leaders are traditionally accorded an official welcome.
A ceremonial archway is being prepared near Izzudheen Jetty, while Republic Square is also being readied for the welcoming ceremony.
President Muizzu extended the invitation to Anwar during his official visit to Malaysia in April 2025. The two leaders held talks during that visit on strengthening the longstanding relationship between the Maldives and Malaysia and expanding cooperation into new areas.
According to the President’s Office, discussions during Anwar’s visit will focus on bilateral relations, opportunities for greater cooperation between the two countries and coordination on issues of mutual interest at the international level.
Several agreements covering areas of cooperation between the two countries are also expected to be signed during the visit.
The Maldives and Malaysia have maintained close diplomatic and people-to-people relations for decades, with Malaysia occupying a particularly familiar place for many Maldivians.
Malaysia remains one of the most popular destinations for Maldivians pursuing higher education, while Kuala Lumpur is also frequently visited for holidays, medical services and business.
A sizeable number of Maldivian students have studied at Malaysian universities over the years, contributing to strong personal and educational links between the two countries alongside their formal diplomatic relationship.
The two countries have also sought to broaden economic cooperation, investment and trade while working together through international organisations and platforms representing Muslim-majority nations.
Anwar took office as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister on November 24, 2022, following a political career spanning several decades.
His appointment marked a major political comeback for a figure who previously served as Malaysia’s deputy prime minister before emerging as one of the country’s most prominent opposition leaders.
Since assuming office, Anwar has pursued a reform programme under his Malaysia MADANI framework, with his administration focusing on economic development, governance and maintaining social cohesion in Malaysia’s ethnically and religiously diverse population of more than 34 million people.
Anwar has also emerged as one of the more outspoken leaders in the Muslim world on the war in Gaza and the Palestinian cause, repeatedly condemning Israel’s actions and calling for stronger international support for Palestinian rights.
The Maldives has similarly maintained a strong diplomatic position in support of Palestine, making the issue another area in which Malé and Kuala Lumpur have broadly aligned internationally.
Anwar’s arrival tonight will be followed by the formal programme of his visit tomorrow, including his meeting with President Muizzu and bilateral talks between delegations from the two countries.
