President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim have reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening relations between the Maldives and Malaysia following high-level talks held in Malé on Tuesday.
The two leaders delivered press statements after concluding official discussions and witnessing the exchange of two Memoranda of Understanding between their governments.
During their remarks, Muizzu and Anwar outlined the key outcomes of the talks and emphasised their shared commitment to expanding cooperation between the two countries across areas of mutual interest.
The discussions were followed by the formal exchange of MoUs on defence cooperation and Islamic affairs, adding two areas of institutional cooperation to the longstanding relationship between the Maldives and Malaysia.
President Muizzu described Anwar’s visit as a strong reaffirmation of the close ties between the two countries, saying the relationship is defined by deep fraternal bonds, mutual respect and trust.
The latest engagements come as both governments seek to broaden bilateral cooperation while building on existing ties in areas including trade, investment, tourism, education and people-to-people exchanges.
Anwar formally welcomed on Tuesday
Prime Minister Anwar arrived in the Maldives on September 14 for a two-day visit at the invitation of President Muizzu.
He was formally welcomed by President Muizzu at Republic Square on Tuesday, September 15, at a special ceremony attended by senior officials from both countries.
The welcoming proceedings began with a cultural performance by schoolchildren and included a guard of honour and a 21-gun salute.
Following the ceremony, the two leaders proceeded with their official engagements, including bilateral talks involving delegations from the Maldives and Malaysia.
The discussions were followed by the exchange of the defence cooperation and Islamic affairs agreements before Muizzu and Anwar addressed the media on the outcomes of their talks.
Anwar’s visit follows President Muizzu’s official trip to Malaysia in April 2025, during which the two governments signed several agreements and explored opportunities to deepen cooperation in a number of sectors.
The Maldives and Malaysia established diplomatic relations in 1968, with the partnership developing over the decades through political engagement, economic cooperation and close people-to-people connections.
Malaysia remains an important destination for Maldivians, particularly for higher education, healthcare, tourism and business, contributing to longstanding social links between the two countries.
The latest talks and agreements represent a further expansion of the bilateral relationship, with both Muizzu and Anwar signalling their intention to maintain close engagement and pursue additional opportunities for cooperation.
