MPL concludes major maritime conference with 200 industry participants

The Maldives Maritime Conference 2026 has concluded after bringing together around 200 maritime professionals, policymakers and international experts for discussions on the future of the country’s maritime industry.

Organised by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), the one-day conference at Villa Nautica was held under the theme “Securing our seas, safeguarding our future”, with discussions spanning maritime security, port development, technology, governance and workforce development.

The conference brought together speakers from the Maldives and abroad, creating a platform for industry professionals and government institutions to exchange expertise on challenges and opportunities facing the maritime sector.

Among the issues highlighted during the conference was the Maldives’ transition towards more technologically advanced port operations as work progresses to relocate the Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi.

MPL said the future of the country’s port sector would depend not only on investment in infrastructure and equipment, but also on developing skilled professionals and adopting modern technologies.

Speaking during the conference, MPL’s Chief Executive Officer highlighted plans to incorporate artificial intelligence and smart technology into services at the new Thilafushi port.

He said physical infrastructure alone would not determine the success of the development, with modern digital systems expected to form an important part of future port operations.

The CEO also highlighted MPL’s work beyond day-to-day port operations, including efforts in maritime safety, security, governance and capacity building.

Particular emphasis was placed on the work of MPL’s Port Training Centre, which is being used to strengthen human resources and develop skills required by the maritime and port industries.

The CEO said achieving world-class operational standards requires sustained investment in capacity building.

Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture Minister Mohamed Saeed attended the opening ceremony as the guest of honour, alongside Health, Family and Social Solidarity Minister Kelaa Ali and senior officials from government institutions and state-owned enterprises.

Saeed highlighted MPL’s role in the Maldivian economy and thanked the company’s management and employees for their work in maintaining the country’s port services.

As an island nation heavily dependent on maritime transport for trade and the movement of goods, port efficiency and maritime security remain closely tied to the Maldives’ broader economic development.

That importance is set to grow further with the relocation of commercial port operations from Malé to Thilafushi, one of the most significant changes planned for the country’s logistics infrastructure.

The conference featured a wide range of local and international speakers, including representatives from Maldives State Shipping, the Ministry of Defence and National Service, Maldives National University, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard and MPL.

International expertise was represented by speakers connected to UN Trade and Development, the World Maritime University, Netherlands Maritime University College, the International Ocean Institute and Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas, among others.

The event was supported by several public and private sector organisations.

Villa Shipping and Trading Company served as hosting partner, while Dhiraagu joined as digital partner, Allied Insurance as insurance and risk partner, Public Service Media as broadcasting partner, Maldives State Shipping as logistics partner and Maldives Maritime Journal as magazine partner.

Elia Investments, Centurion and Sasy Construction participated as bronze partners, while Euro Marketing joined as brand partner.

Institutional partners included government authorities and organisations involved in maritime affairs, security, education and international trade, including the MNDF Coast Guard, Maldives Police Service, UNCTAD, the International Association of Ports and Harbors and Maldives National University.

With the conclusion of the conference, MPL thanked the participants, speakers, partners and sponsors who contributed to the event, describing the gathering as a day of dialogue, collaboration and a shared vision for the future of the Maldivian maritime industry.

The discussions come at a pivotal period for the sector, as the Maldives prepares for the expansion of port capacity in Thilafushi while simultaneously looking towards technology, maritime security and workforce development to support the next phase of the industry.
