The CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Ibrahim Mohamed Shareef has unveiled ambitious plans to enhance and expand services at Velana International Airport (VIA), outlining a strategic vision that includes significant advancements in renewable energy adoption and technological integration.
Speaking on the state media channel PSM’s Raajje Miadhu program, Shareef detailed efforts to transition 90% of the airport’s energy consumption to renewable sources within the next two years. Currently, the Maldives’ renewable energy utilization stands at 4%, with the government targeting a broader shift towards renewable energy, aiming for 33% of Maldives’ energy consumption to be sourced sustainably within five years.
“Our goal over the next two years is to convert at least 90% of our energy usage at VIA to renewable sources, ultimately striving for complete renewable energy reliance,” Shareef emphasized during the Raajje Miadhu program.
Highlighting MACL’s commitment to sustainability, the company’s Deputy Managing Director Lamman Mohamed noted imminent plans for a new powerhouse and upcoming Renewable AirG projects aimed at positioning VIA as the region’s foremost airport powered by renewable energy.
“Renewable AirG initiatives are advancing swiftly and will soon set a benchmark in regional airport operations,” Lamman affirmed.
Discussing future enhancements, MACL CEO and MD Shareef underscored plans to integrate AI technology into VIA’s operations, citing global precedents and emphasizing the potential for streamlined processes and reduced operational costs.
“Many international airports have successfully integrated AI technology, and we are poised to leverage our data and technology capabilities for enhanced efficiency,” Shareef stated.

Shareef also announced plans to implement advanced baggage handling systems akin to those used in major international airports, aimed at optimizing the passenger experience and operational efficiency.
“With the introduction of advanced baggage handling systems, we aim to streamline the sorting, scanning, and boarding processes, significantly enhancing service delivery,” Shareef added.
The Maldivian government’s commitment to VIA’s development was underscored with the launch of a comprehensive 20-year master plan earlier this year, inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. This strategic blueprint aims to transform VIA into a facility capable of accommodating 25 million passengers annually, with a peak capacity of 4,000 passengers per hour.
