Maldivians in Bangladesh Safe, Situation Being Monitored Closely : Foreign Ministry

Recent protests in Bangladesh has escalated into the country’s worst unrest in years.

The High Commission of Maldives in Bangladesh is actively monitoring the situation of Maldivians residing or visiting Bangladesh amidst the current unrest in the country, the Foreign Ministry confirmed in a press release yesterday evening.

According to the statement, the High Commission is in contact with and providing assistance to 90 individuals, including students and families registered with the mission. The Foreign Ministry quoted the High Commission’s assurance that all Maldivians under its care are reported to be in good condition.

The press release highlighted that two students from medical schools in northern Bangladesh have expressed their intention to return to Maldives following the closure of their institutions due to the ongoing unrest. With the assistance of both the Maldives High Commission in Bangladesh and the Maldives High Commission in India, the students have successfully crossed the Bangladeshi border.

Amid the turmoil, the Bangladesh government has imposed a curfew and restrictions on movement. The Maldives Foreign Ministry reiterated its advisory for Maldivian nationals to comply with local directives and follow the guidance of both the Bangladesh government and the Maldives High Commission in Dhaka.
