Security at Maldives Correctional Service has received a technological upgrade with the installation of a modern full-body scanner at Maafushi Prison — a move authorities say will significantly tighten screening procedures and combat illicit activity originating from inside the facility.
The newly installed scanner was officially inaugurated by Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, during a ceremony marking its operational launch.
According to correctional authorities, the equipment is a state-of-the-art model procured through the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. It is the first body scanning system of its kind to be installed at Maafushi Prison, one of the country’s primary detention facilities.
Officials say the introduction of advanced scanning technology represents a broader effort to modernise prison security infrastructure and close loopholes that have historically enabled contraband to enter correctional institutions.
The scanner is designed to detect prohibited items concealed on individuals entering the facility — whether visitors, staff, or inmates being transferred. By enhancing detection capabilities, authorities expect to significantly reduce the smuggling of illicit materials, including mobile phones and other devices.
Minister Ihusaan noted that beyond preventing physical contraband, the technology is also expected to address a growing concern: scam calls allegedly made from within prison walls. Authorities believe tighter screening will limit access to unauthorised communication devices, disrupting fraudulent operations.
The deployment of the scanner signals an effort to reinforce institutional integrity within the prison system while improving overall safety standards. Correctional officials emphasised that stronger screening measures are essential to maintaining order and preventing external criminal networks from operating through incarcerated individuals.
With the scanner now fully operational, the Maldives Correctional Service says it will continue exploring technological solutions to enhance oversight and security across its facilities.
