The construction of 50 council buildings under China’s aid agreement with the Maldives is set to commence by mid-2025, as part of the government’s efforts to enhance local governance infrastructure. According to Minister of Cities, Administrative Areas, and Public Works Adam Sharif Umar, the building works will proceed in the order in which President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu launched the projects.
The initiative, funded through Chinese government assistance, will see the development of 50 council offices using pre-fabricated structures. Additionally, a separate project with a Malaysian company will facilitate the construction of 55 more councils, making this one of the most extensive infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening local governance.
Minister Adam Sharif confirmed that a Chinese research team will arrive in the Maldives next month to conduct feasibility studies on ten identified islands before construction begins.
“The project will move forward in two phases and is expected to be fully completed within two years,” the minister stated, emphasizing that work will commence by mid-2025.
The minister also highlighted that the construction of council buildings will proceed according to the order in which President Muizzu inaugurated each project. The first phase of construction will begin in Raa Atoll, followed by Haa Alif and Haa Dhaalu Atolls, with all projects expected to commence within this year.
The project includes the construction of single-storey and two-storey council buildings, designed to meet the needs of different administrative areas. Single-storey buildings are expected to be completed within one year, while two-storey structures will take up to two years. The entire council infrastructure project is scheduled for completion by mid-2027.
This initiative, carried out under the China-Maldives aid agreement, marks another milestone in strengthening local governance and administrative services. By ensuring that construction follows the sequence of President Muizzu’s project launches, the government aims to maintain efficiency and transparency in the execution of this major development program.
