MWSC Powers Up: New RO Plant Adds 1,000 Tonnes to Daily Water Supply

The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has announced the successful installation and commissioning of a new Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant at its Malé Operations Center, significantly increasing the capital’s water production capacity.

The newly commissioned plant has the capacity to produce 1,000 tonnes of water per day. With this addition, MWSC’s total daily production now stands at 28,000 tonnes—enhancing the company’s ability to reliably meet the growing water needs of the Greater Malé region.

In a statement shared on social media, MWSC stated that the upgrade is a proactive step toward ensuring safe and sustainable water supply to residents amid increasing urban development and rising demand.

“This new plant allows us to serve our communities more effectively and ensure the continuity of clean water access as demand continues to rise in the Greater Malé area,” the company noted.

The expansion aligns with the government’s broader infrastructure development and public utility resilience agenda, as population density in Malé and its adjoining islands continues to climb. With rapid urbanization and tourism-driven growth, the Greater Malé region’s water security remains a top national priority.

Officials say the move also reflects the company’s long-term strategy to enhance operational capacity and maintain service quality across its network. Further expansions are expected in the coming years as part of MWSC’s ongoing investment in water and wastewater infrastructure.

The announcement has been met with widespread approval, with many viewing it as a crucial step in strengthening the country’s essential services in line with future population and tourism projections.
