First-Ever Generational Smoking Ban

In its profile, TIME highlighted the Maldives’ landmark decision to introduce a generational smoking ban, making it the first country in the world to prohibit the sale of tobacco products to anyone born after January 2007. The policy effectively prevents future generations from legally purchasing tobacco.

The magazine also noted additional tobacco control measures implemented under President Muizzu’s administration, including a nationwide ban on the import, sale, and use of vapes and e-cigarettes in 2024. These reforms form part of a broader long-term strategy aimed at eliminating smoking and tobacco use in the Maldives.

Support Systems Paired with Regulation

While TIME acknowledged that the sweeping reforms have drawn criticism in some quarters due to their strict scope, it emphasised that regulatory measures were accompanied by expanded public health support.

These initiatives include:

  • Free tobacco cessation clinics established across all inhabited islands

  • A free 24-hour mental health helpline launched in 2026

The magazine noted that the approach combines preventive legislation with accessible healthcare services.

Landmark Public Health Milestone

TIME further recognised another historic achievement: the Maldives becoming the first country in the world to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B — a major global public health milestone.

Health Reform at the Forefront

Since assuming office in 2023, President Muizzu has positioned healthcare reform as a central pillar of government policy, with emphasis on preventive care, public awareness, and long-term anti-tobacco strategies.

The inclusion in the TIME100 Health list places the Maldives on the global stage for its public health reforms and underscores growing international recognition of its healthcare transformation efforts.
